What is PBIS?
Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) is an evidence-based, data-driven framework designed to create positive learning environments that support improved academic, behavioral, and social outcomes for all students. PBIS is a preventative and proactive framework proven to improve school climate by promoting positive relationships between school personnel, students, families, and other stakeholders. The premise of PBIS is that continual teaching, combined with acknowledgment or feedback for appropriate student behavior, will increase appropriate behavior and promote a climate of greater productivity, and learning. The key to an effective PBIS implementation is an “all-in” mentality among teachers and administrators in a school. For PBIS to produce positive change in a school’s climate, it needs to be employed school-wide and with consistency.
Teaching Expectations to Students
Throughout the year, students will be explicitly the Riverside behavioral expectations: Responsible, Independent, Valued, Engaged, and Respectful. Teachers will help students learn what the expectations “look” and “sound” like in every setting during the school day. These lessons will be re-taught and reinforced throughout the school year and become a regular part of our instructional program.
Behavior Matrix
The behavior matrix is a detailed description of expected behavior in each setting of the school: cafeteria, playground, bus, restroom and hallway. The rules for each setting are linked to our five behavior expectations so that students, staff and visitors to Riverside know what behaviors are appropriate for each location.
The matrix is posted in classrooms, around the school and sent home. *A copy can be found on our resources page.
